Do People Like Me Do Something Like This?

By |August 1st, 2014|Categories: Vanguard Movement|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , |

Whether we realize it or not, we are constantly using this question as a lens to evaluate the world we live in. Everything from products to social movements rises and falls on this question. Do people like me use this? Do people like me go there? What do people like me believe about this idea? We may not want to admit it, but subconsciously, we like to flow with the herd. It makes life easier. A filter helps when I am being bombarded with choices. There's also a security in knowing that my friends, or the people I want to [...]

What Makes Us Different?

By |July 25th, 2014|Categories: Vanguard Movement|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

I’ve been thinking a lot about this question. There’s been a lot of discussion in recent years about advancing the Kingdom of God into the main culture systems of society.  We know it won’t be the work of a few charismatic leaders. Instead, it will be led organically by a tribe of people who shake off their limitations to partner with God’s vision. So, we know this is what wants us to be doing...we're just trying to figure out how to do it. How do we shift culture back to Kingdom principles? How do we leverage influence in order to [...]

Are You Willing To Wear Your Crazy Hat?

By |July 18th, 2014|Categories: Creativity|Tags: , , , , , , , , , |

Last week, my daughter went to Camp Invention. It’s a great program put on by the National Inventors Hall of Fame that gives kids an opportunity to develop their creativity as they try their hand at prototyping their own inventions. On one of the days, the kids were supposed to wear a crazy hat.  My daughter worked hard on designing her own hat and she was really excited about what she had created…until the next day.  When we got to the camp, I could see she was hesitant to wear her hat. At the check in, the teacher wanted to [...]

Fat Or Fight: It’s Time To Choose

I have had a problem with obesity for most of my life, although I didn’t know it. Since I was nine years old, I have been consuming a lot. I consume when I feel bad about myself and when I am worried about my family. I also consume simply because it feels good.  I've tried to do something about it, but just when I get moving, something seems to happen that gets my focus back on consuming. I didn’t think I had a problem. I didn’t notice it was happening.  Until, one day…I looked in the mirror and I didn’t [...]

When God Gave Up

By |May 27th, 2014|Categories: Vanguard Movement|Tags: , , , |

Even as I write this, I am struck by the ridiculousness of that statement. "When God gave up.” We might not say it outright, but so much of what we believe about the world validates it.   Clearly it seems He gave up on: Science – too many Darwinists and athiests hanging out there. Hollywood – the sex, the violence….enough said.  But if I fast-forward the bad parts on the dvd it’s OK to watch it, right? The business world – money is the root of all evil, isn’t it? Government – just a bunch of corrupt, bleeding heart liberals that [...]

Who Wants To Go First?

By |May 19th, 2014|Categories: Vanguard Movement|Tags: , , , , , , , , |

That’s a loaded question. It really depends on what you’re talking about, doesn’t it? I mean, if you’re asking about being first in the line for the restroom after drinking three diet cokes (please, for the sake of us all!), or being chosen first when they were picking teams in grade school, then count me in. But if you’re talking about the first to give the big presentation, or first in line for getting your wisdom teeth removed, there probably won't be as much jockeying for the front of the line. Dancing with uncertainty: Going first isn’t always an easy [...]

The War Against Creativity

By |January 16th, 2014|Categories: Creativity|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , |

It may not seem obvious, but there is a war against creativity.  It’s subtle, fueled by misconceptions and strengthened by our fears.  If we are going be changemakers, we have to rise above this war and activate the "creative" within us. First, let me share two thoughts that contribute to the undermining of creativity.  Misconception #1: You either have it or you don’t A lot of people believe that creativity is an inherent trait.  We all know someone that seems to come up with ideas out of nowhere.  They’re constantly suggesting ideas outside the box and secretly it drives us [...]

The First One

I am writing this first post well before the official launch of Vanguard Creative.  I am still in the process of getting everything ready for the official launch some time in the next few weeks, but I wanted to share a bit about what this blog is all about. Vanguard Creative is an idea that began with a name about two and a half years ago.  I was in a season of personal transition and deep introspection.  I had walked away from a career that had morphed into something I no longer wanted and while I knew without a doubt [...]
